The regional mixed–use center, Metapolis, will be a pivotal focal point for the new city of Hwasung, outside of Seoul. The first place winner in an international competition, Metapolis is comprised of four high rise housing towers, a media center tower, a shopping⁄ amusement⁄ entertainment center, hotels, and science, cultural and academy centers. A linear landscape park connects to the city’s master planned park system, and provides a focus to the complex as well as crucial views from the surrounding high–rises. Design diversity was crucial in all aspects of the project – in order to further break down the project’s scale and provide a dynamic and vibrant regional center.
Mr. Bielski worked intermittently on the design of the (non high–rise) buildings and the central linear park during a period of several years. Two three–week working trips to Seoul comprised crucial coordination efforts with Mr. Son’s partner firm in Korea.
