Canoga Park Elementary School
Design Consultant: Bielski Architects
Architect of Record: Hak Sik Son, FAIA
This 82,000 square foot (21,200 is below grade parking) U-shaped campus plan is organized around its open space playing fields and gathering areas. Each side of the enclosed area is planned differently: the entry side is a solid mass with an animated canopy design demarcating the entry and a corner library (also for community use); the lengthened side is a series of freestanding classroom pavilions with private outdoor classroom areas between; and the final side houses a large gymnasium/: stage which also opens to the main open space for outdoor performance viewing. The compact and efficient campus planning optimizes open space–to–building relationships within a wide range of building design diversity.
Mr. Bielski collaborated with Mr. Son regarding the conceptual layout of the campus and developed various portions of the buildings in the subsequent design phases.
