Our submittal was shortlisted as one of four contestants (from 36 submittals), for the Los Angeles Unified School District's program to develop school building prototypes for +/- 500 campuses. The project maximizes flexibility of use and siting, as well as a rapid 'dry' construction method which utilizes a prefabricated 'kit of parts'. Six prototypical classroom/ special use buildings were developed to adapt to virtually any LAUSD campus condition. A degree of building design customization is incorporated to avoid 'cookie cutter' results, while still optimizing the many benefits of utilizing prototypes. Every attempt was made to maximize the buildings' energy efficiency and budget limitations over both the short and long terms. The following 'green' design and building elements typify the sustainable approach which is integral to the project's functionality and aesthetics: solar chimneys, natural ventilation, high efficiency lighting, exteriorwindow shading and lightweight building materials.
