Jackson Elementary School
Pasadena Unified School District California
This two-story, L-shaped 10,000 s.f. classroom building continues the semi-courtyard plan of the existing campus. Essentially two 'boxes', the classrooms interiors and covered arcades are designed to maximize natural light with generous windows and a translucent exterior canopy. The featured second floor walkway aligns with the campus's existing covered arcade and animates the straightforward classroom buildings. The southern exposed windows are protected by a large cantilevered roof (with three screened cutouts), which provides welcome relief to the blistering sun and contributes to a distinguishing exterior elevation. The distinctly modern design of the building is sensitively related to the traditional campus with a serious of planning and architectural alignments.
