Community Center No. 1
(New City), Korea
This 100,000 square foot community center is located in a new city in the center of Korea - a city which was designed to be the government's administrative center of the country. Numerous community centers competitions were held to find solutions for the many neighborhoods of the rapidly growing new city. Our solution was inspired by the site's context: namely, the adjacent park, the major arterial street bordering the site, and the commercial complex directly to the west of the site. The program is housed in two distinctly different buildings which are connected by a 'circulation bridge'. The landscaped-terrace building merges with the adjacent public park, extending the green space vertically in an inviting gesture for local residents to take part in the community center's activities; the other more monolithic building signals a dynamic profile alongside the major fast moving street - creating an iconic presence which identities the community center on a regional scale. Pedestrian circulation from the commercial complex filters between the two buildings towards the main entry areas and outdoor central plaza of the facility.
