Community Center No. 2
(New City), Korea
Korea's administrative center for the government is being moved to a new city in the center of the country. As a result, numerous competitions have been held to design and build many of the emerging city's buildings. Our 100,000 square foot Community Center competition submittal was in response to this ongoing program. Our solution answered the constraints of a relatively constricted site which was small, long, narrow and adjacent to an undersized existing park and a linear park path. To maximize green space, the park is 'pulled' into and through the community center site and onto the second entry area level of the five story building. Three main buildings house the program and shape generous entry plazas which enliven the facility. Stone and metal cladding and glass playfully interact on the exterior facades. The animated massing, large open space plazas and generous landscaping mitigate the required height and density of the facility in the making of a friendly and welcoming Community Center.
