This proposal for higher density dwelling in the desert community of Palmdale offers a higher density alternative to the city’s existing tract housing and ’dingbat’ apartment sprawl. The housing units are sited above and below an inclined ’desert plane’, which creates various housing types, each with distinct qualities. The irregular edge of the lifted plane simulates the distant mountains – at once drawing them closer perceptually, while accommodating diverse housing plans and volumes. Sustainable issues, such as water run–off harvesting and storage, energy conservation and use of subterranean ground insulation
are integral parts of the project.
