Adjacent to a river on one side and surrounded by a sea of apartment complexes on the other sides, this 2,700–unit housing project proposes an alternative to Korea’s typical high density housing complexes. The usual rigid and uniform housing blocks have been transformed to a series of varied tower–slabs – each uniquely designed around a central landscaped park area. By fragmenting the housing blocks into smaller segments which are then shifted in relation to one another, the complex features animated facades of varying masses, heights, and surfaces. Furthermore, grand scale ‘cut–outsrsquo; in the buildings add to a dynamic composition with framed views through the building masses. Solar access for all residential units was strictly followed throughout the planning stages of the project.
Mr. Bielski collaborated with Mr. Son from the project’s initial design conception through its development as shown in the study model.
