San Francisco, California
This project was developed as a competition entry to re–design San Francisco’s Union Square. The square’s surface was conceived as a ’landscape skin’ which is peeled away, lifted and cut away to reveal otherwise hidden garden–sustaining technologies as well as accommodating various parts of the program. The seemingly surreal techno–landscape plane is accentuated with various additional program elements which are conceived as ’disparate’ pieces.
The submission identifies and integrates the following three components: first, it makes connections between the inner (above the existing parking structure) and outer (store front window side walks) square; second, it provides spaces which optimize diverse and changing uses; third, it introduces various ecological components with integrated educational features.
