Overview:

Stogsdill/ Stroud Residence

Pasadena, California

The remodeling of this Cal Tech-adjacent residence integrates modern elements with existing traditional features. The meticulously detailed kitchen and master bathroom includes generous areas of glass tile, limestone, maple/ birdseye maple, stainless steel and Caesarstone. The forms and finishes are designed to enhance the vintage wood windows and doors - resulting in spaces which are both contemporary and traditional. The Bulthaup kitchen layout is carefully coordinated with the adjacent bathroom - to insure visual continuity as well as functional separation. New wood wall paneling visually connects and extends the entry-dining-kitchen areas between the front and back of the house. Additional natural lighting in the bathroom is provided by a large skylight, which casts a sensuous glow alongside the frameless steam shower with integral built-in seating for two. The home office is animated by a uniquely shaped curved table which melds with a cabinet housing a built-in television, files and miscellaneous storage. The living room's media center consolidates the following disparate functions within one integrated wall unit: plasma television, audio-visual equipment storage, speakers, fireplace and wood storage - enlivening an otherwise bland window-less living room wall with a new sense of depth, varied materials and accent lighting. The exquisitely crafted cabinets are perfectly fitted within each room to align with existing features such as door and window moldings, and provide hidden pockets to conceal the french door curtains.
