Woodland Hills, California
Built in a typical West San Fernando Valley suburb, these two houses (approx. 4,500 s.f. each) provide increased density and flexible use. The houses’ configurations and locations on the site create a contiguous green area while maintaining private gardens for each house (with separated garage areas adjacent an existing flood control channel). One driveway serves both houses, thereby minimizing the typical required area for cars. Each house is designed to allow double occupancy (with two separate entries), for use by guests, extended families or shared households. The homes’ designs were inspired by the Valley’s pre–subdivision era, when houses overlooked extensive farmlands, orchards and newly built waterways.
