Santa Monica, California
This compact residence, on a small Santa Monica lot, houses a workshop and a 3–car garage on the first floor; a living area on the second floor; and an outdoor meditation ’nest’ on the third floor (or roof level). The second and third floors offer a rich spatial exterior sequence which dynamically interacts with the house’s interior spaces. The simple white stucco box–like design is animated with numerous discrete elements – curved stone wall, blue ’nest’, glass ’prism’, etc – which shape, ’pull–in’ or ’observe’ the outdoors. These interventions provide specific and different uses which act as a foil to the otherwise generic white building.
